An Index of “Neighbor” in the Holy Scriptures.

k10

This is an index on the topic of “Neighbor” in the Holy Scriptures. It is profoundly informative. The miraculous verses from the Gospel on the Golden Rule have been modified with contemporary translations from the original, “Treat thy neighbor, as you would have thy neighbor treat thyself.”, to “Treat thy neighbor as thyself.”. I am old school on the Golden Rule because of how it conveys an important concept of reciprocity, but I have included in this Index the contemporary translations of its meaning in the mentioned verses.

Exodus 2:13 NLT
The next day, as Moses was out visiting his people again, he saw two Hebrew men fighting. “What are you doing, hitting your neighbor like that?” Moses said to the one in the wrong.
Exodus 20:16 NLT
“Do not testify falsely against your neighbor.
Exodus 20:17 NLT
“Do not covet your neighbor’s house. Do not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else your neighbor owns.”
Exodus 21:35 NLT
“If someone’s bull injures a neighbor’s bull and the injured bull dies, then the two owners must sell the live bull and divide the money between them. Each will also own half of the dead bull.
Exodus 22:7 NLT
“Suppose someone entrusts money or goods to a neighbor, and they are stolen from the neighbor’s house. If the thief is found, the fine is double the value of what was stolen.
Exodus 22:8 NLT
But if the thief is not found, God will determine whether or not it was the neighbor who stole the property.
Exodus 22:10 NLT
“Now suppose someone asks a neighbor to care for a donkey, ox, sheep, or any other animal, but it dies or is injured or gets away, and there is no eyewitness to report just what happened.
Exodus 22:11 NLT
The neighbor must then take an oath of innocence in the presence of the LORD. The owner must accept the neighbor’s word, and no payment will be required.
Exodus 22:14 NLT
“If someone borrows an animal from a neighbor and it is injured or killed, and if the owner was not there at the time, the person who borrowed it must pay for it.
Exodus 22:26 NLT
If you take your neighbor’s cloak as a pledge of repayment, you must return it by nightfall.
Exodus 22:27 NLT
Your neighbor will need it to stay warm during the night. If you do not return it and your neighbor cries out to me for help, then I will hear, for I am very merciful.
Leviticus 6:2 NLT
“Suppose some of the people sin against the LORD by falsely telling their neighbor that an item entrusted to their safekeeping has been lost or stolen. Or suppose they have been dishonest with regard to a security deposit, or they have taken something by theft or extortion.

1 Then the LORD said to Moses,
2 “Suppose one of you sins against your associate and is unfaithful to the LORD . Suppose you cheat in a deal involving a security deposit, or you steal or commit fraud,
3 or you find lost property and lie about it, or you lie while swearing to tell the truth, or you commit any other such sin.
4 If you have sinned in any of these ways, you are guilty. You must give back whatever you stole, or the money you took by extortion, or the security deposit, or the lost property you found,
5 or anything obtained by swearing falsely. You must make restitution by paying the full price plus an additional 20 percent to the person you have harmed. On the same day you must present a guilt offering.
6 As a guilt offering to the LORD, you must bring to the priest your own ram with no defects, or you may buy one of equal value.
7 Through this process, the priest will purify you before the LORD, making you right with him, and you will be forgiven for any of these sins you have committed.”

“‘Do not testify falsely against your neighbor.
Deuteronomy 5:21 NLT
“‘Do not covet your neighbor’s wife. Do not covet your neighbor’s house or land, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else your neighbor owns.’
Deuteronomy 19:4 NLT
“If someone accidentally kills a neighbor without harboring any previous hatred, the slayer may flee to any of these cities and be safe.
Deuteronomy 19:5 NLT
For example, suppose someone goes into the forest with a neighbor to cut wood. And suppose one of them swings an ax and the ax head flies off the handle, killing the other person. In such cases, the slayer could flee to one of the cities of refuge and be safe.
Deuteronomy 19:11 NLT
“But suppose someone hates a neighbor and deliberately ambushes and murders that neighbor and then escapes to one of the cities of refuge.

11 “But suppose someone is hostile toward a neighbor and deliberately ambushes and murders him and then flees to one of the cities of refuge.
12 In that case, the elders of the murderer’s hometown must send agents to the city of refuge to bring him back and hand him over to the dead person’s avenger to be put to death.
13 Do not feel sorry for that murderer! Purge from Israel the guilt of murdering innocent people; then all will go well with you.

Deuteronomy 22:26 NLT
Do nothing to the young woman; she has committed no crime worthy of death. This case is similar to that of someone who attacks and murders a neighbor.

25 But if out in the country a man happens to meet a young woman pledged to be married and rapes her, only the man who has done this shall die.
26 Do nothing to the woman; she has committed no sin deserving death. This case is like that of someone who attacks and murders a neighbor,
27 for the man found the young woman out in the country, and though the betrothed woman screamed, there was no one to rescue her.
28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered,
29 he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.
